Riverbend Montessori School serves children from eighteen months through age twelve, with Early Childhood and Elementary programs built on AMI-aligned training. The school maintains a strong focus on consistency across its classrooms, ensuring that materials in one room reflect the same presentations and standards used throughout the school.
Keeping the Shelves Consistent
Like many schools, Riverbend orders full material sets on a multi-year cycle, replacing worn or outdated pieces as budgets allow. Between these larger orders, gaps naturally appear on classroom shelves, particularly in botany and cultural subjects, where nomenclature work is rotated and refreshed often.
For Riverbend’s teachers, consistency matters as much as availability. AMI training emphasizes precise, repeatable presentations, and a mismatched or unfamiliar material can quietly disrupt a lesson a child has already absorbed. Filling a shelf gap with anything less than an aligned material was not something the school was willing to do.
Riverbend began supplementing its shelves with printable nomenclature cards, chosen specifically because they followed the same three-part structure and presentation style already used in the classroom. Teachers started in botany, printing leaf and plant nomenclature cards to sit alongside the school’s Botany Cabinet work, then extended the practice into cultural studies, adding geography and continent nomenclature as the year progressed.
Rather than treating the printables as a substitute, teachers folded them into the existing rhythm of shelf rotation, moving printed and physical cards in and out together as interest and readiness called for it.
Children moved between the two without pause. Because the format matched what they already knew, a printed card asked nothing different of them than one bought years earlier — the lesson stayed familiar even as the material itself changed hands.
Riverbend has since made printable nomenclature work a regular part of how its shelves are maintained, particularly in subjects where cards are meant to be refreshed often rather than kept in place for years.
